Neila,
Optometry is the study of ophthalmic optics. Much more physicsy. Its to be an Optician, testing eyes, prescribing glasses, contact lenses, and also screening for any ophthalmological problems. Orthoptics is more secondary care so, based in hospitals. You can broadly split your caseload into adults and paeds. The former being neurology based (cranial nerve palsies, supranuclear palsies, all giving double vision), the latter being squints and lazy eyes. Orthoptists and Optometrists are both branching out into other areas. As an Orthoptist I work in the Glaucoma shared care service, with a number of optometrists. So neither is better than the other... they're just different. If you're thinking of one, I would say it was important to look at the other... A lot of people go into optometry having not heard of orthoptics!
